Jack Champaigne ’80 met Diane (Schueler) Champaigne ’80 when both welcomed new students while serving as Carroll orientation mentors. Their friendship grew in the months that followed, leading to a chilled night in February when they spent time shooting photos and then moved inside the basement of Main Hall for warmth. There, he asked her to marry him. It was Valentine's Day.

While growing up in suburban Illinois, John Heavey ’14 imagined a future as a lawyer, maybe a politician, perhaps a journalist, and acting was also in the mix. With so many career aspirations as a high schooler in 2009, social media was not yet on his radar as something he could do to make a living. That, though, is exactly what he is doing today after accepting a position as a program manager of new products at Facebook, now Meta.

Jane Hamilton '74 witnessed the impact of scholarships while a student at Carroll by seeing how it helped a friend fund her education. Those memories later motivated Jane to give back to current students by establishing the Hamilton Family Foundation Endowed Scholarship for students in the arts.

A trip with friends to Wisconsin’s picturesque Devil’s Lake State Park during her sophomore year at Carroll pushed Jill (Griffis) Kubiesa ’10 toward an activity that she at first declined, saying, "No, that's not for me." Rock climbing. With the encouragement of her friends and fellow Pioneers, though, she built up the courage to give it a try before the trip was over. She discovered she enjoyed it, so much so that she later turned it into a career.

As a young girl in Puerto Rico, Gabriela Otei Castro imagined owning her own business. As a dog lover it occurred to her that, perhaps, those pieces of her identity could be combined. It is that combination, and what she calls “amazing” business and animal behavior programs, that drew Castro to Carroll.
